Pupils

Online Safety

It is vital to educate our pupils about online safety in a 21st Century school.  Our pupils often participate in lessons where online security issues are highlighted, so that they can make independent decisions about keeping themselves safe whilst in the digital and real world. A Police Liaison Officer will also visit the school to support the learning within the classroom, and to ensure that the appropriate safeguarding messages are shared with the children and staff.

Online Safety Guidance

Carmarthenshire County Council believes that the use of information and communication technologies in schools brings great benefits. Recognising the e-safety challenges and planning accordingly will help to ensure appropriate, effective, safe and positive use of electronic communications.

Guidance for Parents/Carers

Here are a number of guides which are aimed at helping parents/carers of primary school aged pupils to stay safe online:

Social Media

If you are unsure about whether your child/ren should be accessing social media websites/apps, the Internet Matters website provides guidance on what the age restrictions are for all social media platforms.  Please note that, as made clear on this website, the minimum age for any social media platforms is 13 years old.

Who do I Contact for Help, Guidance or Support?

Criw Craff

Our Criw Craff council is a pupil body that supports the delivery of ethical digital citizenship across our school.

The Criw Craff regularly attend meetings with the school's Digital Leader (Mr Cousins) and together they plan suitable activities that can be disseminated across our school, with the Criw Craff delivering these vital messages within their own classes.

The Criw Craff have representatives within each class from Year 2 to Year 6.  Their role is to support peers within their own settings by providing advice on how to have fun with the internet, whilst also following strategies to have safer online experiences.

The Criw Craff follow the SMART Rules for online safety, and they have prepared a helpful video to share with the school community, which offers a supportive guide for their peers, parents and the wider community.  Please click the button below to view this guide:

The Criw Craff are also aware that many learners in Johnstown School really enjoy screen time and gaming.  However, too much screen time can have a detrimental impact on our overall development and affect our ability to get the right amount of sleep we need at night.  This problem can be made worse when our devices are not turned off for a period of at least 30 minutes before we go to bed.  With that in mind, the Criw Craff have also created a short video that provides a simple yet effective guide for improving our sleep habits, so that we can have the focus and energy to learn well at school.  Please click on the button below to view this video:
